In defiance of the White House, Stonewall's rainbow flag was re-raised - Queerty
"The flag's removal occurred after the White House launched its fight against perceived signs of "wokeness". Under its new guidelines, the National Park Serve can only display certain flags within state parks. Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal confirmed the change when he shared a photo on social media of a letter from the Department of the Interior to the NPS from late January. It dictates that only the U.S. flag, the DoI flag and the PoW flag can fly at National Parks. The NPS subsequently removed the rainbow flag at Christopher Street Park."
"Hoylman-Sigal, who is gay, expressed outrage at the removal. Joining him in anger were many other high-profile New Yorkers, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Kathy Hochul. New York Attorney General Letitia James called the flag's removal "despicable". Over the ensuing days, hundreds of outraged citizens demonstrated at the Stonewall Inn. Local lawmakers vowed to hoist a new flag themselves."
"I am outraged by the removal of the Rainbow Pride Flag from Stonewall National Monument. New York is the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, and no act of erasure will ever change, or silence, that history. Our city has a duty not just to honor this legacy, but to...- Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@NYCMayor) February 10, 2026"
"In short time, the rainbow flew again at Stonewall. Out state senator Erik Bottcher expressed the feelings of many, calling Stonewall "sacred ground.""
A rainbow flag disappeared from the Stonewall memorial in New York, located in front of the Stonewall Inn, the 1969 uprising site that launched the modern queer rights movement. The removal followed White House efforts against perceived “wokeness,” with new guidelines limiting which flags can be displayed in state parks. A Department of the Interior letter to the National Park Service directed that only the U.S. flag, the DoI flag, and the PoW flag may fly at National Parks. The National Park Service removed the rainbow flag at Christopher Street Park. Prominent New Yorkers, including the mayor, senator, governor, and attorney general, condemned the action. Hundreds of people demonstrated, and local lawmakers vowed to raise a new flag, leading to the rainbow flying again at Stonewall.
