On March 18, ICE agents forcibly detained a Jamaican man inside an immigration court on the 13th floor of 290 Broadway in Lower Manhattan. The man had just received a return court date during his asylum hearing when masked federal agents approached him and demanded to see his paperwork. Unable to produce it, he was taken into an empty room while his wife became hysterical. Legal advocates from the New York Legal Assistance Group attempted to provide assistance. The man's distraught wife received support from volunteers and detention coordinators from Saint Peter's Church, who helped connect her with resources including U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman's office, which assists in releasing detained immigrants without criminal records.
