Sinead Atkinson has been enamored with mermaids since childhood, culminating in her participation in the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. In 2018, she embraced her dream by joining the Long Island Mermaid Pod, expressing joy as she waved to the crowd while dressed as her created character, Mist. The annual parade, touted as the largest arts parade in the U.S., invites anyone to join, with registration available online or in-person. Attendees should arrive early to enjoy the festivities and navigate the large crowds effectively.
"I felt like a princess, waving and flipping my fins," said Atkinson, 33, of Hauppauge, a high school English teacher in Brentwood.
"While you can register on the day of the parade, online registration makes it easier when you arrive," said Adam Rinn, artistic director of Coney Island USA.
"The trains going to Coney Island fill up with all sorts of characters. The ride is a party," said Rinn.
"The earlier you get there the better," he said. "You can eat and shop."
