Sam Phillips, an out Nebraska gymnast, moved to New York City after completing NCAA eligibility at the University of Illinois. He earned multiple All-American honors, secured partnerships with Adidas, Steve Madden, and Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty line, and appeared in a documentary about his experiences. At the NCAA Championships this spring, he placed fourth overall in the high bar. He previously faced harassment on campus, including being called the f-slur, and later led Athlete Ally’s Nebraska chapter. He accepted a post-grad role with Athlete Ally to amplify LGBTQ+ voices in sports.
