A two-alarm fire at Grand Central Madison, which disrupted Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service, started around 8:15 a.m. It was determined to be an electrical fire in a basement along the LIRR tracks. While the fire was successfully extinguished, three firefighters and a civilian sustained minor injuries. FDNY's Robert Tucker noted the challenges faced in fighting the blaze due to 'zero visibility' from heavy smoke. Consequentially, all LIRR service in and out of the station was temporarily halted, and multiple branch services were rerouted or suspended as a result.
FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker stated that firefighters battling the blaze experienced 'zero visibility' because of 'heavy, heavy smoke' conditions, illustrating the dangerous environment they faced.
The electrical fire in the deep basement along the LIRR tracks led to significant service disruptions, forcing the suspension of all LIRR operations in and out of Grand Central Madison.
