In Washington DC, the 'Rainbow Road', touted as the longest LGBTQ+ mural, is being installed on 15th Street just in time for the WorldPride Parade set to begin on June 7. The initiative, led by artist Lisa Marie Thalhammer, features vibrant rainbow colors and contributions from seven LGBTQ artists. Despite breaks for crosswalks due to regulations, the mural aims to enhance urban experience and bike lane safety. The project, involving over 120 volunteers, uses durable epoxy paint to ensure longevity, celebrating creativity and community spirit.
"It's just meant to bring joy and creativity and color to our everyday experience of moving through the city," Thalhammer says. "There's been a really positive response from the neighborhood."
"There have been accidents in the bike lane, but when you give the bike lane more visibility it makes our streets safer for everyone," says Thalhammer.
