Coney Island Mermaid Parade returns this weekend, marking unofficial start of summer in South Brooklyn
Briefly

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade, celebrating its 43rd year, is set to occur this Saturday, drawing over 5,000 participants dressed in colorful, creative mermaid costumes. This event signifies the unofficial beginning of summer in South Brooklyn. However, organizers express apprehension over a proposed casino development that could threaten the parade and the neighborhood's character. They emphasize the importance of community support to preserve Coney Island’s unique cultural identity. Additionally, local businesses anticipate significant sales boosts from the parade, underscoring its importance for the area's economic vitality.
"The artistry, the pageantry, the creativity are all of the people. We just put on the day, and the people are the ones who bring the magic," said Adam Rinn, director of Coney Island USA.
"Would it change the parade route? Potentially. Would it change the face of this neighborhood? Absolutely. Come out and show New York City, show our politicians what this city stands to lose if this casino shows up here," Rinn said.
"It's our second biggest sales day of the year. The weather is looking good, so I'm hoping it stays that way. Fingers crossed for us," said Dennis Vourderis, owner of the Wonder Wheel rollercoaster, adding that he believes a casino would be a threat to Coney Island history.
