Calpernia Addams, a trans activist and actress, was particularly affected as the story reminded her of her former boyfriend, Barry Winchell, who was murdered in a hate crime in 1999. Addams expressed her shock and heartbreak over the mention of Winchell's name and the brutal circumstances surrounding his death, which occurred on the same night she won a pageant.
