The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro and the Justice Ministry exposed a plot linked to hate speech and recruitment of teenagers for violent activities during a concert attended by 2.1 million people. The suspects, part of the 'Little Monsters' fan base of an American pop icon, planned coordinated attacks using explosives. Their activities were revealed through intelligence efforts uncovering digital cells promoting violent behavior. Arrests were made across various states, including a leader for illegal firearm possession and a teen for possessing child abuse imagery.
The operation was based on a report by the ministry's Cyber Operations Lab following a tip-off from Rio state police intelligence, which uncovered digital cells encouraging violent behaviour among teenagers using coded language and extremist symbolism.
The suspects were recruiting participants, including minors, to carry out coordinated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails, the police said in a statement.
