"He's a terrorist who's killed American soldiers, and I think it was insane that I was right there and there was a vigil, so I just took the sign down. I felt that was the right thing to do. ... I feel like someone should show up for the Iranian people."
"These are mad dogs. These mad dogs that cannot be released in the world. We like the fact that [President Donald Trump] is actually helping Iranians to [support the Iranian people against the regime]."
A violent altercation erupted at Washington Square Park during a vigil for deceased Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Remi Even-Esh removed a sign from the pro-Iran demonstration, prompting attendees to assault him. NYPD officers intervened and arrested Even-Esh along with other protesters. Even-Esh stated he acted because Khamenei killed American soldiers and wanted to support the Iranian people. Tension had been building between roughly two dozen pro-Iran mourners and counter-protesters chanting anti-regime slogans. An Iranian woman criticized those mourning Khamenei, characterizing the Iranian regime negatively. Khamenei died during U.S. and Israeli military strikes on February 28.
