Agosto Machado, Whose Shrines Immortalized a Lost NYC Underground, Is Dead
"Emotionally, this is what I embraced because I had nothing. I thought, These memories dwell within my heart. These people, if they'd had time, would have done so much more."
"They call it a march, but it was really more than that; it was a moment of liberation and a stand against oppression."
Agosto Machado, a performance artist and activist, passed away on March 21 after a brief illness. He gained recognition for creating shrines from collected ephemera, reflecting on the lives lost during the AIDS crisis in New York. Born in Hell's Kitchen, Machado had a challenging upbringing and later moved to Greenwich Village, where he became involved with notable figures in the LGBTQ community. His work was deeply personal, focusing on memories of friends and artists who died too young.
