A Gay NYC Nightclub Mainstay to Shutter After 30 Years
Briefly

Chelsea's Barracuda Lounge, a celebrated gay bar and drag performance venue in New York City, is set to close on March 23 after three decades of operation. Founded by Stephen Heighton and Bob Pontarelli, the bar has been a cultural hub since its opening in 1995, playing host to numerous renowned performers and celebrities. However, ongoing construction from a neighboring condo has rendered it impossible to continue operations. Pontarelli promises that the final show, titled "To Proudly Go: Barracuda Blowout Show," will be a memorable farewell for patrons.
"Thirty years is a very long time," Pontarelli said in a statement. Due to construction of a condo project next door, the venue can't continue operating. "The damage from the construction has significantly affected the interior and overall operation of the bar."
With the drilling of the bedrock, "there is no way to anticipate the additional damage and risks that could arise in the future. It is impossible to conduct business as usual."
For its final night on Saturday, March 22 at 6 p.m., it'll host the "To Proudly Go: Barracuda Blowout Show."
