51 names added to NYPD's hallowed Wall of Heroes, including slain Detective Jonathan Diller: 'The very best of us'
Briefly

A ceremony at NYPD headquarters unveiled plaques honoring 50 fallen officers and a civilian, including those who died due to 9/11-related illnesses. Slain Detective Jonathan Diller, fatally shot during a traffic stop, was honored posthumously. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized their enduring absence. Among the honored was Chief of Transit Michael A. Ansbro, who survived the 9/11 attacks but succumbed to cancer years later. Another name added was Chief Gerald Nelson, also a victim of 9/11-related cancer, reflecting the ongoing impact of the attacks on police personnel.
Their names are being added to our Hall of Heroes, but their absence has already been felt at roll calls, in squad cars in homes across the city and the state.
From police officer to chief, uniformed and civilian, the names displayed here represent the very best of us.
He died in 2023 after a battle with 9/11-related cancer.
The name of Chief Gerald Nelson, who served as the commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn North before his retirement, was also added to the wall.
