The DJ Screw Estate is launching DJ Screw’s catalog on streaming platforms this month, beginning with the digital release of a 56-minute mixtape titled DJ Screw Originals (Volume 1). Releases will roll out weekly through the end of June. Previously, the music was available mainly through physical CDs and fan-uploaded YouTube versions. The Estate said the rollout serves long-time fans and new listeners, framing Screw as a local legend turned global icon. DJ Screw helped define Houston’s ’90s sound by slowing hip-hop tracks on turntables to create a syrupy, glitchy style, and he died in 2000 at age 29 from a codeine overdose.
