Brian Eno is calling on Microsoft to end its provision of AI technology and cloud services to the Israeli Ministry of Defense. Eno’s appeal stems from concerns regarding the role of these technologies in facilitating violence and surveillance in Palestine. In addition, he pledged to donate the fees he earned for composing the Windows 95 startup sound to the victims of the conflict. Eno argues that corporate involvement in such operations equates to complicity in acts that violate international law, emphasizing the ethical responsibility of powerful corporations like Microsoft.
Selling and facilitating advanced AI and cloud services to a government engaged in systematic ethnic cleansing is not 'business as usual.' It is complicity.
Today, I'm compelled to speak, not as a composer this time, but as a citizen alarmed by the role Microsoft is playing in a very different kind of composition: one that leads to surveillance, violence, and destruction in Palestine.
