Sulfur Surfer is Bladee’s newest full-length album and his 10th commercial solo full-length, released a decade after his 2016 debut solo record. Bladee’s dreamy, spiritual hip-hop has shown longevity, with continued demand and influence on newer futuristic synthetic-wave artists. His prior album Cold Visions was a major release with many sound and trend spins from the rage scene, though it was bloated like many Rage albums. Drain Gang’s spacey, otherworldly sound helped define Bladee’s style and prefigured hyperpop and digicore aesthetics that later spread online. On Sulfur Surfer, Bladee sounds more ambitious and validated, digging into major musical inspirations and embodying them in tracks, including new age pop, dream pop, indie folk, and black metal on key cuts.
