World premieres: Metropolitan Youth Symphony and Adam Eccleston * Oregon ArtsWatch
"Concertgoers usually get large doses of concertos for violins and pianos throughout a regular concert season, so it was a real treat to hear a flute concerto played by Adam Eccleston and the Metropolitan Youth Symphony under music director Raúl Gómez-Rojas on November 9 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. And adding to the specialness of the occasion, the flute concerto - entitled Spirits of Wildness - was written by Portland-based composer Giancarlo Castro D'Addona and received its world premiere at this performance."
"Eccleston is well-known in the Portland area, wearing several hats as conductor, radio host, educator, and flutist. As part of the MYS artistic staff, Eccleston conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. In July, he was appointed the Executive Director of the Orchestra Nova Northwest where he is also the principal flutist. Works by Castro D'Addona have been performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel and by ensembles at Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, the Berlin Konzerthaus, and other halls. The Oregon Symphony commissioned and performed his De Mi Tierra in June and played Encuentro Obertura Festiva a few weeks ago."
"Straight away in Spirits of Wildness, Eccelston executed numerous florid lines that evoked an otherworldly atmosphere. He easily transitioned back and forth from quicksilver mercurial passages to phrases that were more lyrical. He created the "Talker Spirits" of the first movement, the "Nature Spirits" of the second, and the "Dancing Spirits" of the third. The latter is shaped with lively rhythms and accented by the sound of bongos that drives the piece to a fantastic ending."
Adam Eccleston premiered Giancarlo Castro D'Addona's flute concerto Spirits of Wildness with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony under music director Raúl Gómez-Rojas on November 9 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Eccleston commissioned the work and delivered the definitive interpretation. Eccleston serves as conductor, radio host, educator, and principal flutist, conducting the MYS Symphonic Wind Ensemble and leading Orchestra Nova Northwest. Castro D'Addona's works have been played by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel and at Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and the Berlin Konzerthaus; the Oregon Symphony recently commissioned and performed his pieces. Spirits of Wildness features florid, otherworldly flute lines, alternating quicksilver passages with lyrical phrases, and three movements titled "Talker Spirits," "Nature Spirits," and "Dancing Spirits," the last propelled by bongos to a vivid ending. MYS also premiered 17-year-old Max Evans-McGlothin's tone poem Erin's First Sabbath.
