System Of A Down played their first NYC-area show in over a decade on 8/27 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. The band performed a hits-filled set including B.Y.O.B., Aerials, Chop Suey!, Toxicity and Sugar, and revived Tentative for the first time in ten years. The band also performed their Black Sabbath cover Snowblind for the first time in 23 years as a tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne, a song recorded for The Osbournes soundtrack and performed live between 1999 and 2002. Guitarist Daron Malakian thanked Ozzy and invoked Ozzfest's significance. The show began a six-date North American run with support from Korn, Avenged Sevenfold, Deftones, Polyphia and Wisp. Singer Serj Tankian announced a solo album of covers and collaborations.
System Of A Down played their first NYC-area show in over a decade last night (8/27) at East Rutherford, NJ's MetLife Stadium, marking their first of two consecutive nights at the massive venue. They packed the set with hits and fan faves ("B.Y.O.B.," "Prison Song," "Aerials," "Bounce, "Psycho," "Chop Suey!," "Toxicity," "Sugar"), and they also broke out "Tentative" for the first time in a decade. Perhaps the most exciting setlist inclusion though was that they broke out their cover of Black Sabbath's "Snowblind" for the first time in 23 years in honor of the late Ozzy Osbourne. They recorded the cover for the soundtrack of The Osbournes back in the day and they performed it live a handful of times between 1999 and 2002.
Reflecting on the band's early tours, guitarist Daron Malakian said, "There was one tour that never did more for System Of A Down: the Ozzfest. We did a few Ozzfests, some of you are old enough that you were there, some of you weren't even born yet. I wanna thank Ozzy Osbourne, we wanna thank Ozzy Osbourne!" The crowd then responded with chants of "OZZ-EE! OZZ-EE!" and then SOAD went into "Snowblind." Watch fan-shot footage below.
Wednesday night's show was also the start of SOAD's six-date North American run, which has direct support from Korn on both NYC-area shows, Avenged Sevenfold in Chicago, and Deftones (who just released their excellent new album Private Music) in Toronto. All six shows have additional support from Polyphia and rising shoegazer Wisp. In related news, SOAD singer Serj Tankian announced a solo album of covers, collaborations, and more last week.
