Tributes, not politics, play center stage as President Trump hosts the Kennedy Center honors ceremony
"This is the greatest evening at the Kennedy Center,"
"When Sly gives you a love tap, it's like a sledgehammer hitting your shoulder,"
"The word is, it was pretty much falling down,"
"So I'm really excited about it."
KISS's three living members walked the Kennedy Center red carpet without makeup, wearing tuxedos instead of spandex, and were swarmed by the press. Other entertainers present included Gloria Gaynor, Sylvester Stallone, George Strait, and Michael Crawford. President Trump, serving as chair of the center's board, hosted the Kennedy Center Honors for the first time and said he was closely involved in selecting the honorees, having announced the names earlier in August. Sylvester Stallone was the first honoree, with Bill Conti performing selections of his Rocky score and Kurt Russell recalling working with Stallone on Tango and Cash. Kelsey Grammer honored Michael Crawford and praised investment in the center, saying it had been "pretty much falling down." Presenters largely avoided politics while Vince Gill honored George Strait, described as "The King of Country Music."
