Tom Fletcher from McFly spills the marmalade on writing 'Paddington the Musical'
"Tom Fletcher is best known as one quarter of millennial guitar-pop sensations McFly, though parents may be at least as familiar with his other guise as the author of a hugely successful array of children's books including the, erm, seminal ... series. And now he's been tapped to write the songs and lyrics for the biggest Brit musical of the decade: The Dinosaur that Pooped Paddington . That one word says all you need to know."
"'I compare him to my experience with the Beatles. I don't remember the first time I heard the Beatles. I just seemed to have absorbed their music and at some point realised I could sing almost every Beatles song. I don't remember the first time I saw Paddington, but it always seems to have been there, although I think a lot of people from my generation remember the stop-motion cartoon.'"
Tom Fletcher is best known as one quarter of millennial guitar-pop band McFly and as the author of a successful series of children's books. He wrote the songs and lyrics for The Dinosaur that Pooped Paddington, described as the biggest British musical of the decade. Director Luke Sheppard, playwright Jessica Swale and producer Sonia Friedman collaborated over five years to create the first modern stage outing for Paddington. The production maintains secrecy about the bear's portrayal. Fletcher recalls absorbing Paddington as a child, comparing the experience to growing up with the Beatles. Fletcher has written around 30 children's books and says he has likely sold more books than albums.
