"Stripping his music down to just the essentials, s h i n e was recorded completely live, with Jesso sitting at the piano. Self-produced, the album was mixed by Shawn Everett. According to a press statement, the new songs are about "himself, his mom, his son, a breakup and his life." Contributors to the project include Danielle Haim, Eli Teplin, Julian Bunetta, Justin Vernon, Rosie Hamilton, Tommy King and a psychic."

Jesso earned the inaugural Grammy for Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical in 2023 and shared Album of the Year recognition for work on Harry Styles' Harry's House. The album was recorded completely live with Jesso at the piano, self-produced and mixed by Shawn Everett. Songs address himself, his mother, his son, a breakup and his life. Contributors include Danielle Haim, Eli Teplin, Julian Bunetta, Justin Vernon and Tommy King.
