"As a parent myself and as a rock fan, I know that when I see an album cover with a severed goat's head in the middle of a pentagram between a woman's legs, that's not the kind of album I want my son to be listening to,"
"Labeling is little more than truth in packaging, by now a time-honored principle in our free enterprise system,"
"And without labeling, parental guidance is virtually impossible."
Dee Snider of Twisted Sister testified before Congress on Sept. 19, 1985, opposing mandatory warning labels on albums with explicit lyrics. Snider emphasized his Christian faith, abstention from alcohol and drugs, and argued that parents can judge music by album art and content. PMRC witnesses displayed provocative album art and read objectionable lyrics, while claims were made that some songs encourage suicide and various forms of violence.
