Tickets Alert: A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King's College Cambridge
"A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is broadcast live on BBC Radio on Christmas Eve afternoon, and it's important to point out that it's not the same as the Carols From King's shown on BBC2 in the evening. The famous Carols From Kings is actually prerecorded earlier in the month (sorry for the spoiler), and attendance is limited to college members. However, you can get pretty much the same experience by attending the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve itself."
"The service, adapted from one created in 1880, was first held at King's on Christmas Eve in 1918, a little over a month after the end of World War I and has been broadcast on BBC Radio almost every year since 1928 (they missed 1930). To attend, you used to need to get up to Cambridge early and queue for tickets, but since that inevitably meant many people would go home disappointed, King's College now runs a ballot instead."
"You can apply for two free tickets from here, and you need to apply by Saturday 15th November. A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols will broadcast live on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service on 24 December at 3pm. The service is also re-broadcast at 1pm on Radio 3 on Christmas Day, and at various times on the BBC World Service."
King's College holds a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve that is broadcast live on BBC Radio. The service originated in 1880 and was first held at King's in 1918; BBC Radio has broadcast it almost every year since 1928. Public attendance is now allocated by a ballot to avoid long queues and disappointment, with applicants able to request two free tickets by Saturday 15 November. Carols From King's on BBC2 is a separate prerecorded event limited to college members. The Festival will air on BBC Radio 4 and the World Service, with rebroadcasts on Radio 3 and the World Service. A limited public ballot is also open for the Procession for Advent on 30 November.
