This 21-year-old rapper just made his most ambitious album yet
""Every day, there was a new dream connection, so to speak, being formed," Morton said over a video call in the midst of rehearsals for his upcoming tour."
""It was very surreal.""
""Potency was really important to me," Morton said. "I waited until I was able to access that in a way that I wanted to. That turned out to be a very rewarding choice.""
Marcus Morton, known as Redveil, grew up online and began releasing music on SoundCloud and Twitter while barely a teenager. Acclaimed rappers MIKE and J. I. D boosted early singles before he turned 18. Morton released the drill-inspired "Learn 2 Swim" in 2022 for his 18th birthday and toured with Denzel Curry. The 2023 album sankofa combines live drums, wailing psychedelic guitars, breathy harmonies and nasal, impactful rapping to create a potent, expansive sound. Morton handled most production, drawing on jazz and neo-soul influences, and explored self, family and lineage across the album. He sings more on tracks like "Brown Sugar" and "Stay the Night" while maintaining immediacy.
