"'WAITING FOR THE PHONE CALL' is about grief, love, and mental illness,"
"I lost the person most important to me in one of the cruellest ways. I've always used writing as a method of processing and coping with my emotions. My emotions became a problem and I couldn't control them."
"Writing music with Andy... especially the past seven years had been both the escape and the opportunity to process and try and make sense of life. We've all been waiting on a phone call that can change our lives at some point. This unfortunately focuses on a phone call that you never want to have."
Scottish post-punk band The Twilight Sad released the single "WAITING FOR THE PHONE CALL" featuring The Cure's Robert Smith on guitar. The track includes contributions from occasional live members David Jeans and Alex Mackay of Mogwai alongside core duo James Graham and Andy MacFarlane. The song centers on grief, love, and mental illness, reflecting Graham's loss and his use of writing to process overwhelming emotions. Graham describes writing music with Andy over the past seven years as both an escape and a way to make sense of life. The band announced a headlining 2026 UK/Europe tour with tickets on sale October 31 and summer dates opening for The Cure.
