"There were 16 men on a fishing boat, but only three survived the storm, and one of those went missing, and is presumed dead. That leaves me and Peter Balkan, whose health is failing as his apocalyptic visions dissipate in the spray at the shore."
"Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan follows 2023's Jenny From Thebes. The Replacements' Tommy Stinson and harpist Mikaela Davis make guest appearances, alongside Miranda and the band's new bassist, Cameron Ralston, who joined following the departure of longtime bassist and backup vocalist Peter Hughes last year. The Mountain Goats will kick off a North American tour later this month."
Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan will be released November 7 on the band's Cadmean Dawn label. The lead single "Armies of the Lord" features backing vocals from Lin-Manuel Miranda. John Darnielle frames the album around a maritime catastrophe in which only three of sixteen men survive a storm and one is presumed dead, leaving him and Peter Balkan. The record follows 2023's Jenny From Thebes and includes guest appearances by Tommy Stinson and harpist Mikaela Davis. Cameron Ralston joins as the new bassist after Peter Hughes' departure. A North American tour will begin later this month, and a twelve-track listing accompanies the release.
