The effusion of difficult emotion: Newport Symphony performs Higdon, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky * Oregon ArtsWatch
"Newport Symphony Orchestra's next concert - their last of the season - happens this month, with performances at 7:30 pm on March 21 and 2 pm on March 22. This "Listening for Shakespeare" program features performance poet Frank Oden joining the orchestra for Bard-inspired music by Otto Nicolai, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Giuseppe Verdi, Dan Kellogg, and Leonard Bernstein."
"Flatt described the evening's program as one that "begins and ends with works that are elegiac and openly personal to the lives of the composers," expressing "deep and human topics," a fair way of characterizing such different works as Jennifer Higdon's blue cathedral and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 "Pathétique.""
