A graph based on the Tufts Cooperative Election Study indicated an almost 50% drop in US adults aged 18–22 identifying as transgender or non-binary between 2022 and 2024. Róisín Murphy shared the chart and wrote that the trend was not real and had caused havoc for children, families and society. Psychologist Jean Twenge suggested changing levels of social acceptance could explain the rise and subsequent fall in self-identification on surveys. A social media user argued that increased hostility makes people less likely to be openly trans. Murphy replied briefly in response.
