Fred Smith began his career playing bass with Debbie Harry and Chris Stein in Angel and the Snake before joining Television in 1975, replacing Richard Hell. He released "Little Johnny Jewel," helped secure label interest, and contributed to Television's influential 1977 album Marquee Moon, which heavily influenced post-punk and new wave. Smith stayed through the band's 1978 album Adventure, reunited with Television for their 1992 album, and toured into the 2000s. He also worked with artists including the Roches, Willie Nile and the Fleshtones. Smith died at 77 after an unspecified illness.
