Sturgill Simpson Releases New Album Mutiny After Midnight Early on YouTube
"Simpson said he and his band - now billed as Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds - made an "album centered firmly on groove," inspired by hours of watching fusion-funk greats Stuff and revisiting albums like Marvin Gaye's In Our Lifetime, where the end-of-the-world response is "let's dance and make love.""
"He further explained that the songs are divided between the dark state of the world and the bright state of love, but that for all its big ideas, the band's simple goal was "to make a dance record.""
Sturgill Simpson's new album Mutiny After Midnight, released under the Johnny Blue Skies moniker with his band The Dark Clouds, contains nine tracks recorded at Nashville's Easy Eye Sound Studios. Each song was written spontaneously during recording sessions. The album prioritizes groove and dance elements, drawing inspiration from fusion-funk pioneers Stuff and classic albums like Marvin Gaye's In Our Lifetime. Simpson describes the record as balancing dark themes about the world's state with bright themes of love, ultimately aiming to create a dance record. The album is available physically through High Top Mountain Records and Atlantic Outpost on vinyl, CD, and cassette, with a YouTube stream also provided. This marks Simpson's second release as Johnny Blue Skies following 2024's Passage Du Desir, with a supporting tour planned for 2026.
