Sturgill Simpson announces new Johnny Blue Skies "dance record," 'Mutiny After Midnight'
"Mostly, I'm very excited and honored to be working with my dear friend Ian Cripps, and to finally bring to fruition a vision we initially shared together over ten years ago. I wrote words to what is happening in the world and my life in real time, and played with a group of musicians I deeply love and respect. Together, we made an album that is very fun and will hopefully offer some relief from darkness in the world."
"The majority of this band has been on the road together on and off and on again for over thirteen years. We have all grown sometimes together and sometimes apart. But we've never felt more "together" than right now. I couldn't be happier. This is the band I've dreamed about being in since middle school. Last year we did two complete laps around the U.S. and a tour of Western Europe."
Mutiny After Midnight is credited to Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds and is due March 13 via High Top Mountain/Atlantic Outpost. The album will be released on physical media only. Sturgill Simpson produced the record with musical contributions from the Dark Clouds and recorded at Easy Eye Sound Studios. The project aims for a dance-oriented sound and pairs lyrics written about world events and personal life in real time with longtime touring kinship among band members. An opening track titled "Make America Fuk Again" has shared lyrics, and the band cites fusion-funk and concept-record inspirations.
