Billy Corgan revealed that The Smashing Pumpkins reunited in the studio with producer Butch Vig for the first time since the Siamese Dream era over 30 years ago. Corgan, along with James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin, recorded one song with Vig, which is described as about 98% complete. The plan is to release the track sometime in 2026, though the exact timing is not specified. Corgan indicated there is a timing issue and expressed doubt the band will premiere the song during the upcoming Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness 30th anniversary tour. The tour features nightly sets of Mellon Collie songs plus a second set of hits and deeper cuts, with tickets going on sale May 21 via Ticketmaster.
"“We've just recorded one song,” Corgan said, taking his time to tease the announcement. “It's for a specific purpose, which I can't give that part out... I haven't come up with a title yet, honestly. The plan is the song will be released this year. I can't say exactly when. There's reasons for that... The song is really cool. It's basically done recording. I'd say there's a couple little things left. I'd say it's 98% done.”"
"The Pumpkins worked with Vig on their first two studio albums, 1991's and 1993 breakout Siamese Dream. When asked whether The Smashing Pumpkins will debut the song on their upcoming fall Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness 30th anniversary tour, Corgan said there was a “timing issue” and expressed doubt they would premiere the track before it drops."
"Each night of “The Rats in a Cage Tour” promises one set of Mellon Collie songs alongside a second set featuring hits and deep cuts from the band's discography. Tickets for the trek, which kicks off this fall, go on sale beginning on Thursday, May 21st at 10:00 a.m. local time through Ticketmaster."
