"The Budhrani Brothers- Manav on guitar and Pritish on clarinet-balance technical precision with melodic warmth, creating performances that honor traditional jazz while developing a contemporary, clean and energetic sound. Drummer Sylvia Cuenca has been a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Drum Competition and is a two-time NEA Grant recipient. Faculty positions include Stanford Jazz Workshop and Jazz Camp West. She previously received the San Jose Jazz New Works Grant in 2022."
Five San Jose residents are among 20 Bay Area musicians awarded $1,000 grants from San Jose Jazz's Jazz Aid Fund to stimulate creation of new work. The Budhrani Brothers, Manav (guitar) and Pritish (clarinet), blend technical precision with melodic warmth. Saxophonist Oscar Pangilinan toured Asia with the SJZ Collective and directs San Jose Jazz youth programs. Drummer Sylvia Cuenca is a Thelonious Monk semifinalist, two-time NEA grant recipient and prior San Jose Jazz New Works grant recipient. From Feb. 20 to March 14, 2026, six grantees will premiere commissioned works at the SJZ Break Room in downtown San Jose as part of a Winter Series, with selected names to be announced in mid-December.
