Rob Hirst, drummer and co-founder of Midnight Oil, died at 70 after a nearly three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. The band confirmed his passing and said he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Hirst formed the band with schoolmates in Camden, New South Wales, and the group released its debut album independently in 1978. Midnight Oil combined muscular rock with outspoken political activism, achieving national and global success with albums like 10,9,8... and Diesel and Dust and the hit single "Beds Are Burning." Hirst was noted for stylish drumming, memorable solos, and co-writing key songs.
