Ricky Martin will receive the inaugural Latin Icon Award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards and will perform during the ceremony. Lady Gaga leads the 2025 VMA nominations with 12 nods, and global girl group KATSEYE earned their first nomination. MTV announced the award on Instagram on August 19. Martin previously made VMA history in 1999 as the first male Latin artist to win best pop video and was the event's most awarded artist after performing "Livin' la Vida Loca," which won five VMAs and earned the first Latin nomination for video of the year. Born in San Juan, Martin began in television ads, rose to prominence with Menudo, launched a solo career with Sony Music Mexico in 1991, came out as gay in 2010, and has advocated for LGBTQ+ causes, including headlining L.A. Pride in 2024 as the first out gay Latin artist to headline and perform there. The 2025 VMAs will air September 7 on CBS, on MTV, and stream on Paramount+ for premium subscribers.
Thrilled to be honouring @ricky_martin with the first ever 2025 #VMAs Latin Icon Award!
