"Backengrillen, an experimental band featuring three members of legendary hardcore act Refused, have announced their debut album, a self-titled effort arriving January 23rd via Svart Records. The announcement comes a month before Refused play their final shows ever, as part of their farewell tour. The band will close out its career with a series of concerts in their native Sweden, culminating with a pair of gigs December 20th and 21st in their hometown of Umea."
"Backengrillen's music is a paean to chaos and destruction. The basic idea is to take a death/doom metal, or noiserock riff and play it until it loses meaning and then break it apart like a ravenous cat would a tiny forest mouse. It's filled to the brim with the self-hatred endemic to the province of Västerbotten from whence the member's hail. The record was written on a Thursday during their first ever rehearsal, performed live on a Friday and recorded on a Saturday, so what you're hearing is raw, stupid, gut instinct music played by seasoned purveyors of hardcore punk, metal, free jazz, noise et cetera."
"Record no 2 is in the making, less stupid, more ugly. Stay tuned and fuck the pigs."
Backengrillen will release a self-titled debut album January 23 via Svart Records. The group features Refused members Dennis Lyxzén (vocals), Magnus Flagge (bass), and David Sandström (drums) alongside saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. The announcement precedes Refused's farewell concerts, which conclude with shows December 20 and 21 in Umeå. Backengrillen describes its music as a paean to chaos and destruction, transforming death/doom metal and noiserock riffs into raw, gut-instinct performances rooted in Västerbotten self-hatred. The record was written during a first rehearsal and performed and recorded over a single weekend. A second record is already in the making, and the band played gigs in January 2023.
