Portland Chamber Orchestra announced that its 79th season will be its last, with the board cancelling the remaining two concerts and notifying the state of Oregon of dissolution. The board expressed gratitude to patrons and musicians and described the PCO as "an intimate symphony with infinite imagination." The ensemble began in 1946 and is believed to be the oldest continually operating chamber orchestra in the United States. Boris Sirpo founded the orchestra with students from Lewis & Clark College and led European tours during his lifetime. Yaacov "Yaki" Bergman served as longtime artistic director until his death in September 2023, and Deanna Tham served most recently. The orchestra performed standard repertoire, world premieres by Oregon composers, klezmer music, Indigenous-themed concerts, and multidisciplinary performances including dance and visual elements.
