Pete Townshend, age 80, plans to continue performing for roughly five more years with solo one-man shows after The Who's farewell tour concludes in late September. Townshend reports about 140 tracks in development and intends to complete his long-gestating solo album, The Age of Anxiety, begun in 2007, using solo touring to experiment with new material. Townshend regards the September 28 Las Vegas concert as the end of The Who's regular run while allowing for unlikely brief reappearances. Townshend expects to collaborate with Roger Daltrey on charity and special projects despite limited social interaction and recounts a Royal Albert Hall incident that contributed to Zak Starkey's removal.
"I've got songs in all kinds of development, 140 tracks ready to go,"
"We reserve the right to pop up again," he said. "But I think one thing is very clear: that at our age, we will not."
"Roger and I certainly [will] work together for charity and possibly for special projects," Townshend said. "Together we represent all aspects of The Who legacy. You know, I'm the songwriter and creator, but Roger's been the driving force, meaning keeping The Who band and his brand on track. Even with his solo work, we'll continue to work together, even if we rarely socialize."
