Nisse Karlén, co-founder, lead singer, guitarist and bassist of Sacramentum, died at 50 after struggling with mental health and took his own life. Nisse Karlén, the lead singer of the influential Swedish melodic black metal band Sacramentum, has died at the age of 50. Sadly, he took his own life, as revealed in a social media post by the band. "With deep sorrow, we share the heartbreaking news that our dear friend, band member, and one of the founders of Sacramentum, Nisse Karlén, has passed away," read the statement from Sacramentum posted on Monday (August 25th). "He chose to leave this world due to struggles with mental health."
Karlén, who also played guitar and bass, co-founded Sacramentum in 1990 under the name Tumulus. After changing its name to Sacramantum, the Swedish outfit went on to release three full-length studio albums in the 1990s before breaking up in 2001. They re-formed in 2019, and had been actively playing shows ever since. Sacramentum's 1996 debut album, Far Away From the Sun, is considered a landmark release as far as melodic death metal is concerned, with a number of bands citing it as an influence.
