"withholding royalties"
"acted in bad faith."
Chad Hugo filed a lawsuit on January 23 alleging Pharrell Williams withheld royalties and prevented Hugo from accessing documents showing what he was owed. Hugo's lawyer Brent J. Lehman wrote that Hugo has not received his appropriate share of royalties from The Neptunes and N.E.R.D.'s album sales, released music, touring income distributions, and merchandising deals. The complaint asserts Hugo may be owed up to $1 million and alleges no revenue distributions since 2023. Hugo and Williams formed the Neptunes as childhood friends, produced major hits, were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022, and previously litigated a 2024 trademark dispute.
