"Portland Opera announced that General Director Sue Dixon will retire at the end of this year after 11 years of leading the 60-year-old company through turbulent times. The company's announcement praised her dedicated service and fundraising ability (over $40 million in contributed revenue not including COVID relief funds), creation and execution of a five year strategic plan, mission statement revision, rebranding, and cultural equity plan."
LaRhonda Steele, a celebrated Portland singer and Oregon Music Hall of Fame honoree, is battling cancer. A benefit concert on Saturday, October 18 at Alberta Rose Theatre will feature The Norman Sylvester Band, Curtis Salgado, Mary Flower, Renato Caranto, and other musical luminaries; Lynn Darroch and Ken Boddie will host. Steele has led the Portland Interfaith Gospel Choir since 2013 and teaches traditional Black gospel music and its historical and socioeconomic context. Steele will also appear in the Oregon Repertory Singers' Sing for the Cure concert. Sue Dixon, General Director of Portland Opera, will retire at year end after 11 years. Her tenure brought over $40 million in contributed revenue, a five-year strategic plan, rebranding, cultural equity initiatives, new commissions and premieres, and leadership through the COVID crisis; a search for her successor has begun.
