Mabel Matiz: The queer pop star taking on Turkey's anti-LGBTQ+ censorship
"like a miracle"
"more playful, more free and more nourishing"
"I feel so happy to be on stage, to show my authentic self to people,"
"I know it will be a reflection for people and the audience usually feel happy to see [themselves in] my reflection. It's like a conversation."
Mabel Matiz is a 40-year-old Turkish musician who performed to thousands in Ankara and has nearly two billion Spotify streams and five million monthly listeners. He grew up debilitatingly shy in Mersin but now finds being on stage “like a miracle” and describes performances as more playful, free and nourishing. His live shows fuse band-backed traditional Anatolian folk with playful, experimental electronica and are being reworked with new arrangements for a London show. Recent months brought a maelstrom of bogus controversy linked to a collaboration with French electronic duo Ko Shin Moon, creating an emotional period.
