A recently departed soul named Alejandro arrives in Mictlán, the land of the dead, on the eve of el Día de los Muertos but cannot remember his past. La Muerte notices Alejandro's memory loss while los muertitos prepare to return briefly to the living to visit loved ones. The portal to the other land is blocked because one of the dead is holding the group back. To cross in time for the holiday, los muertitos must help Alejandro resolve his unfinished business or risk being stuck until next year.
