"Slayer's Kerry King was asked to choose between two of his fellow "Big 4" thrash-metal bands, and not only did the guitarist pick Metallica over Megadeth, he worked in a zinger about Dave Mustaine's vocal abilities. At the end of an interview with host Vanessa B of the YouTube series Reigning TV, King and Mark Osegueda (singer for both Death Angel and King's eponymous band) were challenged with choosing between a number of bands and musicians."
"Prior to be asked "Metallica or Megadeth," the pair were presented with "James Hetfield or Dave Mustaine?," with Osegueda immediately saying, "Het!," and King adding, "James Hetfied. Sorry, Dave, I know I played in your band, but I'm going with James." Later, they were asked, "Metallica or Megadeth?," with Osegueda once again giving an immediate response: "'Tallica!" King followed with "Metallica," and when the host started to move on to the next matchup, King interjected, saying, "Hang on, hang on, I'm gonna be brutally honest: Metallica has a singer. Sorry, Dave." Yikes!"
"In other news, Megadeth recently announced they will release one final album and embark on a farewell tour. Included on the album will be cover of Metallica's "Ride the Lightning." Slayer, meanwhile, will be among the headliners of the inaugural Texas edition of the Sick New World festival, taking place in October 2026."
Kerry King chose Metallica over Megadeth and explicitly preferred James Hetfield to Dave Mustaine, recalling his brief time in Mustaine's band. King apologized to Mustaine but said he was going with Hetfield and later delivered a blunt critique of Mustaine's vocals by stating, "Metallica has a singer." Mark Osegueda also favored Metallica and Hetfield in the rapid-fire matchup questions. The pair made additional picks between other rock and metal icons. Megadeth announced a final album featuring a cover of Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" and a farewell tour. Slayer will headline the Texas Sick New World festival in October 2026.
