Indie Basement (3/6): HELP(2), Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, and more
"Thirty years ago, many of the biggest names in the UK indie/alternative world (plus Johnny Depp) recorded new songs for HELP, a compilation album that benefited the War Child charity. It was a high-concept record, with artists given just 24 hours to record a song and deliver the finished product, and the album was released by the end of the week."
"This time the process worked a little differently, with producer James Ford coordinating a week of sessions at London's Abbey Road Studios and assembling a lineup of artists that rivals - if not betters - the original compilation. With so many talented people in the studio at the same time, including a bunch of ringer musicians helping out everywhere (Johnny Marr, Portishead's Adrian Utley, Blur's Graham Coxon), there's a lot more cross-pollination on HELP(2)."
A new HELP compilation album has been created to benefit War Child, supporting children affected by global conflicts. Unlike the original 1995 compilation where artists had 24 hours to record, this version involved coordinated week-long sessions at London's Abbey Road Studios. Producer James Ford assembled a lineup of major UK indie and alternative artists, enhanced by guest musicians including Johnny Marr, Adrian Utley from Portishead, and Graham Coxon from Blur. The increased presence of multiple talented musicians in the studio simultaneously created more cross-pollination and collaboration opportunities. Children participated by singing in a backing choir and conducting interviews, adding another dimension to the project.
