Helmuth Rilling was born in Stuttgart in 1933 and co-founded the Oregon Bach Festival in 1970 with University of Oregon Professor Royce Saltzman. He served as the festival's artistic leader for more than 40 years and retired in 2013. Rilling and Saltzman built the festival from "a modest summer workshop" into an internationally known event that attracted musicians and audiences worldwide. Rilling died Feb. 11, 2026, in Leonberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at age 92. Sabrina Madison-Cannon described his legacy as immeasurable and highlighted his musicianship, humanity, and lasting influence. Separately, President Trump announced a two-year closure beginning July 4 to renovate the John F. Kennedy Center.
