"I spent most of my childhood in the suburbs, surrounded by the American Dream. Grand and lonely, strip malls and housing developments. Cathedrals of consumerism and reconstituted culture. The stores weren't built for the towns, the towns were built for the stores. No one really belongs. The dream is close enough to smell but as soon as you reach out, your hand passes right through - a hologram of a promise."
"Over a decade into his career, Philadelphia singer/songwriter Greg Mendez released his first music for Dead Oceans, the EP First Time / Alone, in 2024, and now he's announced his first full-length album for the label, Beauty Land, which is due out on May 29. Most of it was recorded directly to tape in his home studio."
Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter Greg Mendez has announced Beauty Land, his first full-length album for Dead Oceans, arriving May 29, 2024. The album was primarily recorded directly to tape in his home studio. The lead single and opening track, 'I Wanna Feel Pretty,' begins with sparse instrumentation before incorporating orchestral elements. The accompanying music video, directed by Rhys Scarabosio, visually represents Mendez's commentary on suburban American culture, consumerism, and the illusory nature of the American Dream. Mendez describes the aesthetic as reflecting the hollow promise of consumer-driven development. He has announced a summer tour running from June through August, featuring performances with Scarlet Rae and Maria BC across multiple cities.
