"His creative contributions were immense, and his presence-both musical and personal-will be deeply missed. Godspeed, Greg."
"He took to it right away, and I didn't really understand what he saw in it so much,"
"I liked the way it sounded and everything, but I thought 'Frank Sinatra' was a much stronger choice for the single. But the record label chose it and it worked out."
Greg Brown died at 55 after a brief illness. Brown co-founded Cake in 1991 with John McCrea, Vince DiFiore, Frank French, and Shon Meckfessel. Brown co-wrote the band's first two albums, Motorcade of Generosity (1994) and Fashion Nugget (1996), and played guitar and organ with a sharp, jagged approach rooted in blues rock and country swagger. Brown wrote Cake's biggest hit, "The Distance," which reached No. 4 on Alternative Airplay and No. 35 on Radio Songs. Brown and bassist Victor Damiani left before Prolonging the Magic (1998) and formed Deathray. Brown worked with Rivers Cuomo's Homie and Matt Sharp and reunited with Cake in 2011.
