Five Fits With: Power Pop Legend Nick Lowe
"Known for his legendary contributions to the power pop canonwith singles like Cruel to Be Kind and production work with artists like Elvis CostelloNick Lowe has been musical for almost all of his life. That's thanks to his mother. Born into a military family (his father was in the Air Force), Lowe moved all over the world as a kid. I don't know about now, but there used to be a lot of people I knew in the music business"
"who had come from families like that, he tells me. Maybe that's got something to do with why you don't really mind doing so much traveling, you know? There must be some truth to this notion; he's been active musically since 1966. Around age seven, Lowe's mother taught him some chords on the guitar. He tells me she was a very good, old-fashioned singer, with a voice like Rosemary Clooney."
Nick Lowe grew up in a military family and moved frequently around the world as a child. His mother sang regularly and taught him guitar chords around age seven. Early listening included Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Dinah Washington, and Tennessee Ernie Ford; his father owned jazz records. Lowe and his mother spent time harmonizing songs, which enchanted him and gave him a taste for creating layered vocal music. Lowe has been active musically since 1966. He toured the U.S. playing the album Indoor Safari with Los Straitjackets. Topics associated with his career include longevity, thrifting in 1960s America, and style lessons learned throughout his career.
