"The Diablo Valley College Concert Chorale will take the stage May 2 at Saint Mary's College Chapel in Moraga for a performance that blends ambitious music-making with a deep sense of community, inclusion and purpose. Directed by Bret Peppo, who has taught at the Pleasant Hill- and San Ramon-based Diablo Valley College (DVC) for 18 years, the concert features a "Mass for the Forgotten," a contemporary work by composer Richard Burchard,"
""As I get older, I am evolving in what's important to me," Peppo said. "When I was a younger musician, creating a beautiful choir was the most important thing. Everything we did was to create a beautiful, finished product for the concert." He says it's different today. "Choir is an escape from the real world for two-and-a-half hours," he added. "Our goal is to build a community of people, and each rehearsal is as important as the performance.""
Diablo Valley College Concert Chorale will perform May 2 at Saint Mary's College Chapel in Moraga, featuring Richard Burchard's contemporary "Mass for the Forgotten." Bret Peppo, DVC instructor for 18 years, directs the ensemble and has taught college music for 30 years, having discovered singing later in life. The chorale intentionally welcomes singers aged 16 to 86 and emphasizes inclusion and community. Rehearsals are valued as highly as performances, shifting focus from producing a pristine finished product toward building relationships and providing an escape from daily life. Recent outreach expanded invitations to all faculty and staff to join the ensemble.
